Class IV Indole Alkaloids (mol files)

5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT)
This substance occurs in a variety of leguminoceae genera, including Anandenanthera columbrina and others...classified as a hallucinogen.
N,N-diethyltryptamine (DET)
A synthetic tryptamine hallucinogen.
N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT)
A naturally occuring dimethylated tryptamine closely related to 5-MeO-DMT, occuring often in the same species as 5-MeO-DMT.
N,N-dipropyltryptamine (DPT)
A synthetic tryptamine hallucinogen. (Even a church in N.Y. built over the effects of this one...)
harmine
Harmine is a beta carboline, formed by the Mannich-type reaction of tryptamine with a carbonyl carbon (in this case a keto acid). Harmine acts as a monamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Without MAO activity, the human body is unable to break down tryptamine type alkaloids, leading to oral activation of simple tryptamines such as DMT. This was taken advantage of in South America when the ayahuasca brew was made, combining plants which produced harmine or harmaline type beta-carboline alkaloids with plants producing the simple orally inactive tryptamines, DMT and 5-MeO-DMT. The combination is described as qute intense, although not as much as other methods of activation of DMT (smoking, iv, im)...however it tends to be longer lasting. NOTE: THE WRITER OF THIS (ME) DOES NOT ENCOURAGE THE USE OF BETA-CARBOLINES WITH TRYPTAMINES, AND ANYONE PLANNING TO DO SO SHOULD BE AWARE OF WHAT THEY EAT AS MAOIs ALSO EFFECT THE ABILITY OF THE BODY TO PROCESS CERTAIN AMINO ACIDS (Phe. Tyr. Trp.), LEADING TO MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS AND POSSIBLY DEATH...sorry to sound so harsh...
Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)
First prepared in 1938, it's amazingly potent hallucinogenic effects were first discovered by the same man who prepared it, Dr. Albert Hofmann in 1943. Usual doses range from as little as 25 micrograms to more than 300 micrograms...still an amazingly small amount of material. Duration is about 6-8 hours usually.
4-hydroxy-DMT (psilocin)
This is one of the two main psychedelic agents found in "magic mushrooms" - in the genera Psilocybe, Panaeolus, Copelandia and Conocybe. These mushrooms were used in ancient Mexico, especially in the area around Oaxaca, by the Mixtec where they were given the name "Teonanacatl", flesh of the gods...
4-phosphoryl-DMT (psilocybin)
This is the other of the two main psychedelic agents found in the genera mentioned under psilocin. It is actually de-phosphorylated easily into it's physiologically active hydroxyl form, psilocin.
5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin)
A CNS neurotransmitter found naturally in humans. It appears to have important roles in depression, sleep, sex and body temperature. The infamous Prozac (fluoxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It decreases depression by blocking the ability of the body to re-metabolize serotonin, thereby increases levels of it in the brain...
indole
This is the basis for all the others, occurs as a precursor to a variety of substances in the plant kingdom. This action as a precursor is often indirect, as indole is rarely utilized most often as a substrate for the tryptophan synthase beta-2 subunit in the formation of tryptophan in the presence of L-serine and pyridoxal phosphate. L-tryptophan is then utilized as the most common precursor to the indole alkaloids, the focus of this page.
