This compound is found in Rauvolfia serpentina, and is an antihypertensive. As is commonly found, the local customs there already knew this and it was used in India for thousands of years in the treatment of mental illness and as a tranquilizer. It represents a trimethoxybenzoyl derivative of the yohimbine family of alkaloids.
